স্বনামধন্য কৃষি বিজ্ঞানী ও বিশিষ্ট জীবপ্রযুক্তিবিদ ড. মো. আব্দুল্লাহ ইউছুফ আখন্দ-কে বাংলাদেশ কৃষি গবেষণা ইনস্টিটিউট (বারি) এর নতুন মহাপরিচালক হিসেবে নিয়োগ দেয়া হয়েছে। কৃষি মন্ত্রণালয় জারিকৃত আদেশ বলে তিনি বারি’র মহাপরিচালক (রুটিন দায়িত্ব) পদে নিয়োগপ্রাপ্ত হন। এর আগে ড. মো. আব্দুল্লাহ ইউছুফ আখন্দ বারি’র পরিচালক (গবেষণা) হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেন।

 

ড. মো. আব্দুল্লাহ ইউছুফ আখন্দ ১৯৯২ সালে বাংলাদেশ কৃষি গবেষণা ইনস্টিটিউট এর উদ্ভিদ প্রজনন বিভাগ এ বৈজ্ঞানিক কর্মকর্তা হিসেবে যোগদান করেন। এরপর তিনি নিয়মিতভাবে উদ্ভিদ প্রজনন বিভাগ, বারি, গাজীপুর এর ঊর্ধ্বতন বৈজ্ঞানিক কর্মকর্তা এবং জীবপ্রযুক্তি বিভাগ, বারি, গাজীপুরের প্রধান বৈজ্ঞানিক কর্মকর্তা ও মুখ্য বৈজ্ঞানিক কর্মকর্তা পদে পদোন্নতি প্রাপ্ত হন।

 

তিনি ইউনিভার্সিটি অব ডান্ডি, স্কটল্যান্ড, ইউকে থেকে জিন এডিটিং এর উপর উচ্চতর গবেষণা করে পি.এইচ.ডি ডিগ্রি এবং সাইন্স এন্ড এডভাইস ফর স্কটিশ এগ্রিকালচার (SASA), স্কটল্যান্ড, ইউকে থেকে জিন সাইল্যান্সিং এর উপর পোস্ট ডকটরাল রিসার্চ ডিগ্রি অর্জন করেন। তিনি নিয়মিত বিভিন্ন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের এমএস, পি.এইচ.ডি ছাত্রদের তত্ত্বাবধান ও  ইনস্টিটিউটের বিজ্ঞানীদের আধুনিক গবেষণা বিষয়ক যুগোপযোগী নির্দেশনা দিয়ে আসছেন। ড. আখন্দ বাংলাদেশ কৃষি গবেষণা ইনস্টিটিউটের আধুনিক জীপ্রযুক্তি বিষয়ক গবেষণার অগ্রদূত। এছাড়াও দেশি বিদেশি বিভিন্ন সায়েন্টিফিক জার্নালে নিয়মিতভাবে বৈজ্ঞানিক প্রবন্ধ প্রকাশ করেন। ড. মো. আব্দুল্লাহ ইউছুফ আখন্দ ০২ ফেব্রুয়ারি ১৯৬৭ সালে এক সম্ভ্রান্ত মুসলিম পরিবারে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তাঁর পৈত্রিক নিবাস নেত্রকোনা জেলার মদন উপজেলায়।

Dr. Md. Abdullah Yousuf Akhond

Renowned Agricultural Scientist and Eminent Biotechnologist Dr. Md. Abdullah Yousuf Akhond has been appointed as the newly appointed Director General of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). According to the order issued by the Ministry of Agriculture he has been appointed as the Director General (Routine Charge) of BARI. He served as the Director (Research) of BARI, Gazipur before joining in this post.

 

He joined at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute's at Plant Breeding Division, Gazipur as a Scientific Officer in 1992. He was subsequently promoted to the rank of Senior Scientific Officer, Principal Scientific Officer and Chief Scientific Officer.

 

Dr. Md. Abdullah Yousuf Akhond holds PhD degree with advanced research on gene editing from the University of Dundee, Scotland, UK and completed his postdoctoral research degree on gene silencing from Science and Advice for Scottish Agriculture (SASA), Scotland, UK. He has been regularly supervising MS, PhD students of various universities and providing up-to-date guidance on modern research topics to the scientists of the institute. Dr. Akhond is the pioneer of modern biotechnology research at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. He also regularly publishes scientific articles in various local and foreign scientific journals. Dr. Md. Abdullah Yousuf Akhond was born in 02 February 1967 in a noble Muslim family. His parental home is in Madan upazila of Netrakona district.
